July 15th is a rare creature indeed: a Friday release date. The two entries may actually earn some attention for themselves, which is always a desirable attribute. Why these particular titles were chosen is anybody’s guess, but oh well.

  • Rango – Johnny Depp is always a huge draw, even as the voice of an animated chameleon. This chameleon is stranded in the middle of the desert and adopts the name ‘Rango.’ Through a series of events, Rango becomes the sheriff of a small, animal-populated town plagued by a posse and corruption. This extremely popular western for all ages also features the voices of Isla Fisher, Alfred Molina, Abigail Breslin and many others.
  • Arthur – Imagine Russell Brand playing a drunken playboy with too much money. When Arthur (Brand) faces the possibility of being cut off from his fortune if he doesn’t marry a ‘suitable’ girl, he realizes that things must change. This is made difficult when he falls for a girl who is free-spirited, yet lower on the socio-economic scale. What will he choose? Will he be able to stay out of trouble? Also starring Jennifer Garner, Helen Mirren, Greta Gerwig, and Luis Guzman. Arthur hardly seems to be a stretch for Brand and there are those who will be devoted to the Dudley Moore original. Perhaps viewers will be open to an update on the ‘fun with alcoholism’ theme.

Both of these films are now available to rent/purchase in Allentown, the Lehigh Valley and beyond.

When J.J. Ellis isn’t writing as the Allentown DVD Examiner, his Decent Exposure Radio can be heard on the air every Friday night from 10:30 to midnight (EST) on WXLV 90.3 FM or wxlvradio.com!
